Leong was born in New Hampshire and moved to Cary at age four, growing up there through dance, basketball and community service work in high school. College at the University of Southern California brought a growing sense that helping people was the right calling, which led to medical school and a master's degree in public health at UNC Chapel Hill. A family medicine residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson sealed the choice of specialty, drawn to caring for patients across every stage of life and building relationships with families that last for years.

After residency, Leong helped establish primary care in Tucson before moving into private practice back in Cary. Years of working inside insurance-based primary care left Leong wanting a model built around patients first, which is what brought Leong to Ashford Health.
