David Gilbert, MD

My name is David Gilbert and I'm the owner of Downeast Primary care. I'm a Pitt County native, growing up in Winterville before my family moved out near Farmville and Fountain. I graduated from Greenville Christian Academy before earning my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience in 2005 and MD from ECU's Brody School of Medicine in 2010. I completed my Family Medicine residency at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, where I served as Chief Resident. After a year as faculty at U of L, we returned home to Winterville to be closer to family. For the next decade, I served in various roles at ECU's Brody School of Medicine, including course and clerkship directorships and Interim Associate Dean for Medical Education, all while maintaining an active clinical practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings. My growing frustration with the traditional medical system's barriers to care led me to explore the Direct Primary Care model, recognizing its benefits for patients, families, and communities. I describe myself as a 'yes and' doctor, meaning I'll often advise a combination of treatment options combining pharmaceutical, procedural, lifestyle, and alternative options when appropriate to give my patients a more versatile toolbox to manage their health and try to make sure they know all their options. My wife, Heather, and I homeschool our two daughters. In my free time I fish, train at a powerlifting gym, watch F1, and I'm learning to garden. I'm dedicated to providing compassionate and comprehensive care to all my patients, guided by Jesus' teaching to love our neighbors as ourselves, regardless of their background or circumstances.
