Abigail Hemken, MD

Dr. Abigail Hemken is a family physician at Hemken Family Medicine in Ames, Iowa, where she has practiced family medicine from birth through end-of-life hospice care for more than 13 years.

She earned her biochemistry degree from Azusa Pacific University before completing her M.D. and family practice residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, training in hospital medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics and adult medicine along the way. Her training also took her abroad, with elective rotations in Mexico, Kenya and Zambia, a month spent as a volunteer physician at a women's clinic in Pakistan, and short-term trips supporting local doctors in Egypt and Iraq.

After residency she joined a physician-owned practice in Carroll, Iowa. Four years later she met her husband and transferred to the practice's Iowa Falls location, where she continued full scope family medicine until February 2022.
