John Shugrue, MD

John Shugrue, MD, is a board-certified family medicine physician at Journey Direct Primary Care (FreedomDOC) in Hoover, Alabama. Born and raised in the state, he stayed close to home for his training, earning his undergraduate degree from the University of South Alabama, going to medical school at UAB, and completing his residency in Tuscaloosa.

After a decade practicing in traditional insurance-based healthcare, he made the move to Direct Primary Care to bring back what he calls old school medicine, the kind where a doctor actually knows the patient and is there when needed.

A self-described girl dad, Shugrue spends his free time at the movies, traveling, swimming, and making trips to local farmers markets with his family.
