Lorna Shanks, MD

Dr. Lorna Shanks grew up in western Colorado and was influenced by her father, a general surgeon. During high school, she volunteered with Amigos de las Americas in Valle, Honduras, where she helped build water tanks to prevent mosquito-borne diseases, sparking a passion for community health and the Spanish language. She attended the University of Puget Sound, graduating in 2005 with a major in Spanish and a minor in Chemistry. She studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. She began medical school at the University of Washington in 2007. Prior to medical school, she worked for two years in the radiology department at the University of Washington Medical Center. During medical school, she provided care for HIV-affected infants and mothers in southern India. She completed her residency in Vancouver, Washington, with a focus on pediatric care, labor and delivery, and outpatient surgical procedures. Dr. Shanks is a bilingual physician (English and Spanish). She spent six years at the Kaiser Permanente Rockwood office in southeast Portland before joining Bridgeport Family Medicine in Tigard. She eventually founded Shanks Primary Care, a clinic operating under the Direct Primary Care model to provide transparent pricing and personalized attention. Her professional focus includes pediatric care, labor and delivery, outpatient surgical procedures, community health, gender-affirming care, and HIV treatment.
