Michael Hughes, MD

Dr. Michael Hughes is a family practice physician at Trailhead Clinics in Grand Junction, where he has practiced in the Grand Valley since 1994. He earned a bachelor's degree in molecular biology from the University of Colorado in Boulder, then worked in a research lab at the CU medical school while completing a master's degree in public health, finishing that program the year before he entered medical school. He went on to the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and completed his residency at St. Mary's Family Practice.

For nearly 24 years at Western Valley Family Practice, Hughes provided the full range of family medicine, including pediatric care, obstetrical care through 2010, and hospital and emergency room coverage. His focus today centers on chronic disease management, preventive medicine, and men's health, with the goal of helping patients make better decisions about their health and find their own balance of physical and mental fitness.

He and his wife have made Grand Junction home since 1991 and raised two children there. Hughes has taken part in medical mission trips to Honduras since 1996. A longtime cyclist, he raced competitively during medical school and again years later, and he has completed the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic five times. He also enjoys running, hiking, traveling, and reading.
